Trying to catch up on my duties from last week, I had a trio of workouts in quick succession in Beaufort.  A few weeks ago I built a wheelchair ramp and deck for a family who has an 8 year old with MS. You’re probably thinking what does this have to do with exercise?  It gave me about 10 4X4 post scraps that I made an even 3 feet long.  These are perfect for a little something from my past that has been revived called “rifle pt”.  Now we can’t run around Beaufort with small arms tossed over our shoulders but in weight and size a post will suffice.  Any exercise can be done as usual but this adds just enough to make you sore.  When doing push ups on a post you can actually get a full range of motion, it makes sit-ups just that much harder, and it weighs enough to make overhead presses a chore.  I’m not going to detail every exercise but one that has a special place in my heart is the “dive bomber” which is a modified push up where you start with your tail in the air and swoop down scraping your chest on the deck then push back up to the sky and reverse back to where you started.  It is a challenge especially if you have good form and watching some of you trying to execute this while keeping the form of what looks like a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model is entertaining in itself.

Over the past few weeks we have tried to utilize the Turner Street bridge that is currently under construction.  This where my Chicken Shack workout was held where I focused on the chest and shoulders.  The highlight of this was the crane that was left low enough to get a max set of pull ups on.  Sadly, the crane has been moved so no more pull ups.  The next day was the first post workout and a few ambassadors from MHC showed up giving us a larger than usual group.  We started downtown and worked our way down Turner Street to the bridge, stopping along the way the find new uses for scrap lumber.  On Wednesday I ran downtown from my house and saw the bridge was a little cluttered for safe use so the following day we kept the posts but stayed around Middle Lane and Front Street throwing in some new variations of carrying part of a tree around.  Some of you may be disappointed but the post that weighs about half as much as the other was unceremoniously placed in the burn pile.  This won’t be the only kind of workout I do but it will come out from time to time always adding something new.

I’ll do a better job of staying caught up of these that way I’m not doing 3 at a time!  Come visit Beaufort I’m always thinking of a new way to be sore and tired.  Also, April 28th there is a race in Ocracoke 5k 10k and half-marathon. I’m planning on flying up for the race and have 2 seats left. If you weigh under 200 lbs. and trust me with your life let me know if you want to go. 30 minute flight time each way.
