SHIPLAP’s 24 hour ULTRA for Carteret Community Theater – Hurricane Florence Recovery

Tomorrow I will participate in the Tideland 24 ultramarathon race at the Cedar Point Recreation Area. 64 participants will run a 1.3 mile trail loop for up to 24 straight hours. The goal is to complete as many miles as one can during that time. You can quit whenever you want, you can take breaks for as long as you’d like, you can walk the entire duration if you choose. The race starts Saturday at 8:00 am and ends on Sunday at 8:00 am.

I am running this race to raise awareness and funds for the reconstruction of the Carteret Community Theatre which sustained significant damage from Hurricane Florence and is closed until funds can be secured and repairs can be made.

If you have been to any shows at the Carteret Community Theatre you know what a gem the theater is to our community, which is why I am passionate about helping them get the theatre rebuilt. If you aren’t familiar with our community theater just imagine a place with dedicated experienced volunteers that work tirelessly creating shows that give a truly meaningful sense of purpose and belonging to the many children (and adults) that take part in the shows they produce. Imagine a place where kids come to see their first live performance and are inspired to tryout for a play the next year. Imagine a place where a kid has the supportive environment to blossom from a shy kid into a confident thespian.

We can’t imagine that right now because the theater has lost its home! So I have run 540 miles the last 12 weeks and stopped drinking as much beer at night, so that I can give myself the best chance of running this 1.3 mile loop for 24 straight hours in the hopes that the ostentatiousness of running so many miles at once will inspire you to donate money to rebuild our theatre.
